When we think of freedom, external obstacles usually come to mind: pressure, prohibitions, injustice. Yet the heaviest chains are often the ones we fasten with our own hands.
A person held captive by a habit, a fear or an expectation cannot be the author of their own life, however free they may appear. The Qur'an first calls us to confront the idols within: “Have you seen the one who takes their own desire as their god?” (Al-Furqan, 25:43)
The freeing of the heart
Tawhid binds the heart to a single centre and rescues it from scattering. A heart attached to God is neither spoiled by praise nor broken by blame. This is where true freedom begins.
Small steps
Inner freedom is not won all at once. Daily self-accounting, mindful consumption, keeping one's word, not shying away from speaking the truth… every small step loosens a chain.
Whoever wishes to change society must begin with themselves, for a free society can only rise on the shoulders of people who have freed themselves.
